Amalia came to US in 1854. lived in New York, married Ferdinand Panther, then moved to Hickory Run, Carbon CO, PA. Two children born in WilkesBarre. Moved to Iowa in 1860's. Do census records show any other Traubs in that area? Is Schuylkill CO(Pottsville) anywhere near Carbon or Luzerne CO? It seems that several Traubs came in different years, then all moved to Iowa together. Don't know if Frank Traub came at all. One daughter, Louisa, remained in Germany. Have you tried any of the ship's passenger lists on Cyndi's list and elsewhere? Where did descendanys end up? Email direct to simons@niia.net

Ferdinand and Amelia Panther's 50th Anniversary article says that Amelia's mother was 92 years old and lived at the time in Baden Germany.

John and Sophia were married in 1868 in Whitehaven, PA. John was born in Pennsylvania in 1828 or so and was married to a woman named July before he enlisted in the army and served in the Civil War in Co. F of the Pennsylvania Volunteers. But John was so reticent, he never told anyone he was married before or that he had two kids from his first marriage until his sons from both marriages (remember he had moved to Iowa in about 1868 also) met by accident !!!! on the railroad and compared notes, having the same last name, and discovered they had the same father. He also never talked to his wife about his parents or siblings, if any. This information is contained in the affidavits filed for Sophia to get his pension.

Infantry Regiment was part of XI Corps, 1st Division. Their division commander was Barlow, the
youngest division commander of the Union Army. He recklessly occupied Barlow's Knoll north of
Gettysburg on July 1, 1863 on the first day of battle. He was seriously wounded and left behind when
John Snyder and the other gallant soldiers had to abandon this position and retreat into Gettysburg.
They fought ferociously for two hours before being overwhelmed by superior Confederate force. The
retreated through the streets of Gettysburg enroute to a supplementary position known as Cemetary
Hill. Along the way the people of Gettysburg gave them water from tin ladels because it was such a
hot day and they had been engaged in continuous combat for two solid hours. Their mouths were
black from biting off the powder bags used in their rifles and very dry. John Snyder was either very
lucky or very good in surviving this first day. According to accounts, over 2000 died out of 10,000
deployed against over 25,000 Confederates.
