Mrs. Caroline Birk, who had made her home at St. Francis hospital for the past five years, died there at 7:50 o'clock last night at the age of 78 years. Her death came as the result of three weeks' illness.
Mrs. Birk was born in Baden Baden, Germany, October 4, 1847, and with her parents came to this country and resided in Pennsylvania for a few years before moving to Burlington in 1878. She was married to Chris Birk in Pennsylvania in the early seventies. He was an employe of the West Burlington shops and preceded Mrs. Birk in death eleven years ago. A daughter died at the age of nineteen.
Mrs. Birk was a member of the St. John's Catholic church and of the Alter society of that church.
She is suvived by two sisters, Mrs. Amelia Panther, 91 years old, of Burlington, and one in Germany and fifteen nieces and nephews, both in this country and Germany.
The body was taken to the Burnette Wallen mortuary, where friends may call until the time of the funeral. The services will be held from St. John's Catholic church, with interment in St. John's cemetery, at a time to be announced later.
