George went to work for the CB&Q railroad in West Burlington in 1917. He served in WWI in France and was soon to go to the front lines but the Armistice was signed. He returned in 1919 and returned to his job but was now located in Galesburg as a fireman. His train route was from Galesburg to Ottumwa, Iowa.

George's wife Emma was from the Dodgeville area and George knew her before he went to service. They settled in Galesburg, Illinois.

One time when making his run the train had to stop in Mt. Pleasant. The train was going to travel to New London and return to Mt. Pleasant before completing the route to Galesburg. Since the Frank Panther family lived next to the railroad tracks, George took his nephews, Joe and Fritz, for a train ride to New London and back.

He worked in his garden June 18, 1941 and took the train that evening to Ottumwa. He became ill with acute nephritis. The infection from his kidney caused blood poisoning and he died the next day in an Ottumwa hospital.

George had purchased his first car, a 1941 Chevy, five days before his death.

I found them on the ship "R L Gillchrest," which left Le Havre, France. It arrived in New York 24 Oct 1854. I don't recall the exact names on the ship register, but I remember that they were listed together and Amelia was listed under her maiden name. There is a possibility they were married in New York.

By 3 Sep 1857, I have the couple married and living in Wilkes Barre Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. They are in the 1860 census at Kidder Township, Carbon County, Pennsylvania as Ferdinand Pender & Mrs. Pender.

By 5 Aug 1868, I have the family in Des Moines County, Iowa. They are in the 1870 census at Franklin Township, Des Moines County, Iowa as Fred. Pander & Amelia Pander.
